What is Trauma Therapy?
Trauma therapy is a specialized form of counseling designed to help people recover from the psychological and emotional impact of a stressful or life-altering experience. Trauma can be from a wide range of incidents such as abuse, accidents, loss, natural disasters, or other situations that overwhelm your ability to cope.
Distressing memories and the feelings associated with them can remain “stuck” in the brain, triggering negative patterns of thought, behavior, and physical sensations. In trauma therapy, the focus is on creating a supportive space where you can process these experiences at your own pace. The focus is on addressing both the emotional and physiological responses to trauma.
Healing from Trauma
Trauma therapy is as much about healing as it is about growth—finding the parts of yourself that feel loss or disconnected and building strength to shape your story. Whether your trauma stems from a single event or a series of events, therapy can offer hope and tools to support you. Healing from trauma is not about erasing your past or forgetting what happened to you—it’s about learning to coexist with it in a way that it no longer controls the present or shapes your future.
“What happened to you?” is so important in understanding what’s going on with you now.”
What is Complex Trauma?
Complex trauma is for persons that have experienced ongoing and repeated exposure to trauma or traumatic events. These events may have occurred in childhood or just a series of events over an extended period of time. Unlike trauma from a single event, complex trauma deeply impacts a persons sense of self, relationships and ability to trust. Therapy for complex trauma is centered around healing from the long term impact by building self-compassion, emotional regulation, and developing healthier coping skills.
